Born in 1946,  Prof. Sumita Chakrabarti was brought up in Dhanbad Dist. (Presently Jharkhand). Her father Dr. Bibhuti Bhushan Sarkar was a medical practitioner by profession. Her interest for Bengali Literature grew from the very childhood. She studied in Kulti Girls High School. This is a place where the Bengali culture mixed with non-Bengali culture, so the children of this place learn Bengali, Hindi & English language. Sumita grew up like wise. Her passion was for Bengali, English, Sanskrit and History in her school days. After passing school final she got admitted to Asansol Girls College. She stood 1st class 2nd in pre - university examination and in graduation she stood 1st in Burdwan University in Bengali (Hons) and got the National and DPI Scholarship. In 1967 she passed M.A.(Bengali) in 1st Class 1st and won the gold Medal. She is married to Mr. PRABIR Kr. CHAKRABARTI (1974).
   
In 1972 she got the Phd. in Bengali under the supervision of Late Prof. Jibendra Sinha Roy. She started her career from a newly established college in Dhanbad. Later she joined Bhagalpur University as lecturer in Bengali. Then she joined Burdwan University. She was the Dean of Arts, Commerce and Management faculties in Burdwan University (2004 - 2006). After retirement she was formerly attached to Aliah University, Park Circus, Kolkata. She is also invited to different universities as guest faculty regularly.

She comes to world of writing in 1975 and started writing in various magazines. Her 1st publication was "Poet Amiya Chakraborty" in 1981 and after that her writings are regularly published.

Apart from writing she is regularly taking part in debates, discussions and seminars in various organisation,  e,g, in Asiatic Society, Tagore Research Institute, Sahitya Akademi, Paschim Banga Bangla Akademi, Centre for Advance Studies in Simla. She was the 1st Coordinator, Centre of Advanced Studies, Bengali in Burdwan University. Now she is associated with different projects of Nazrul Centre for Social and Cultural Studies in Kazi Nazrul University, Asansol, West Bengal.
